Q) What is FME Server?
A) FME Server 2008 is...
a brand new Safe Software product that helps organizations centralize spatial data transformation and distribution tasks to reduce dependence on GIS departments and increase end user autonomy. FME Server 2008 comes with a number of services including file download, data streaming and, KML Network Link. FME Server is also available in a SpatialDirect Edition that includes all of the functionality provided in SpatialDirect 2007. To read more about FME Server, visit our website (http://www.safe.com/products/server/keyfeatures.php).
Q) What if I have FME SpatialDirect already and want to upgrade to FME Server?
Current FME SpatialDirect AMC holders are welcome to upgrade to FME Server. Please see the fmePedia article Upgrading_from_SpatialDirect_to_FME_Server_2008.
FME Server 2008 was built on pre-existing FME Server technology used in SpatialDirect. FME SpatialDirect functionality is still available in FME Server SpatialDirect Edition but you will also be able to utilize some of the great new things we have added to FME Server:
- FME Server is workspace driven. Deploying workspaces for file download or any other service is very straight-forward.
- FME Server provides other services in addition to file download such as Stream Download, KML Network Link and File Upload.
- FME Server 2008 stores a repository of workspaces allowing services to query workspaces about items such as published parameters and feature types.
- FME Server will be more easily supported and upgraded in the future.
Q) We already own software called FME Server we purchased prior to 2008, is this the same product?
A) Safe Software Inc. has sold a number of products in the past we referred to as "FME Server". Please contact sales@safe.com to receive more information about your existing software and FME Server 2008.
Q) Does FME Server come with Workbench?
A) No, FME Server is based on a services oriented architecture and is not intended for use as an authoring environment. To author and publish workspaces to FME Server, you will need a separate authoring environment (FME Desktop).
