I'd agree that fanouts are very powerful and woefully underused, and our new training course will have a filter/fanout pseudo-batching example. But yes, I probably would suggest using Batch Deploy. It is an easier concept for beginners to grasp, plus it was updated in FME2005 so you can choose which input and output dataset(s) you need to batch. Makes it very flexible and handles a couple of situations you couldn't duplicate with filters/fanouts.
